Explore the Wild

FFI Durham Campus Yard and Gardens

Welcome to our vibrant ecosystem in the making! At Friends Forever International, we believe in fostering environments that support learning, resilience, and ecological diversity. That’s why we’ve embarked on a journey to let our Durham Campus Yard and Gardens go wild—creating a sanctuary for pollinators and wildlife right in our backyard.

Why Go Wild?

Our initiative aligns with the FFI RECIPE values of Resilience, Empathy, Communication, Impact, Playfulness, and Effort. By allowing nature to take its course, we enhance the biodiversity that is crucial not just for our local environment but for educating our youth and community on the importance of ecological balance.

Benefits of Rewilding

Increase Biodiversity

Research from the UNH Sustainability Institute shows that rewilding efforts can significantly enhance local biodiversity. These projects create diverse habitats that support various species of flora and fauna, contributing to ecosystem health and resilience (UNH).

Water Quality and Hydrology Improvement

Rewilding improves water quality and hydrology by allowing natural vegetation to filter pollutants and manage stormwater more effectively. This reduces the risk of flooding and enhances the health of aquatic ecosystems (UNH).

Carbon Storage

Forests and rewilded areas play a crucial role in carbon sequestration. According to studies by the UNH Sustainability Institute, protecting these natural areas maximizes their carbon storage potential, helping to combat climate change (UNH).

Economic Benefit

Rewilded areas can reduce maintenance costs associated with traditional landscapes. By lowering the need for watering, mowing, and chemical treatments, these areas become more sustainable and cost-effective in the long run (UNH).

Public Participation & Education

  • Plant a Legacy: Join us in planting perennials, contributing to a lush, sustainable environment. Each plant added to our gardens becomes a part of our educational pathway, demonstrating the ongoing impact that each individual can have on our world.

  • Scavenger Hunt: Kids and families are invited to explore our gardens with a self-guided scavenger hunt. Identify various trees and plants with the help of a provided map and learn interesting facts along the way.

  • Learn from the Experts: Throughout the gardens, find quotes and statistics about the critical role of pollinators, with insights from New England's leading environmental experts.

Community Engagement

  • Volunteer Opportunities: We offer chances to 'adopt' a section of our yard or join us during maintenance days. It’s a great way to get involved, meet like-minded community members, and contribute to our collective effort.

  • Corporate Involvement: Companies looking to make a difference are welcome to sponsor sections of our gardens or participate in group planting days. It’s a powerful way to build team spirit and a sense of community responsibility.

Visit Us

  • Walk the Paths: Our garden paths are open to the public. We encourage you to visit and enjoy the natural beauty as it unfolds. Each path offers a unique view into the world of wild growth and the creatures that thrive within.

  • Learn More About Us: Visit our main office in Durham to learn more about our missions and programs.
